    I never brooding a knife actually mattered...
    I always condign used the flimsy cheap 5" knives that were given to us prior to this purchase. This was my first "sensitive" piece of cutlery. The difference is amazing. Chopping vegetables takes half the on occasion that it used to with the cheaper knives. I particularly like the heavier feel of the santoku over other specialty knives I have acquainted with in the past. If you are looking for a general purpose knife to handle your daily chopping needs, I would approvingly recommend purchasing this.
    cogent knife.. questionable durability?
    We have second-hand this knife regularly since we bought it about 9 months ago. It handles wells and is comfortable to use. The blade maintained it's sharpness every antiquated we honed the knife. We took good care of the knife as we had hoped to keep it for a long time, Stored it suitably, cleaned it after every use, never dropped it before, etc. In general, we really enjoyed using this knife while we had it However, just yesterday, while we were doing the tableware, the knife was accidentally knocked off the counter. Our initial fear was that we ruined the tip. When we picked it up, the knife was split in half between the leaf and the handle. We were incredibly surprised because the knife was made with one continuous piece of metal from the blade and through the handle. Outwardly the metal at the tip of the handle had rusted through (even though we dried the knife before storing it). We wonder how long the knife would have lasted even if we hadn't dropped it. And...

    For oneself: the 5-inch blade is perfect for my soft vegetable (e.g., tomatoes) food-prep operations, because it allows me impenetrability to the work and precise leverage of my hand and arm to perform slicing. Before becoming a Computer Science Professional, I was a Licensed Barber; keeping the edges of my straight razors in ringlets-splitting condition was a pride to me and a pleasure to my patrons.

    Description

    Combining features of a chefs knife and a cleaver, the Santoku is an all outcome Asian-style knife that's ideal for cutting meat, fish and vegetables. The word "santoku" means"three chaste things"- a reference to the three cutting tasks it performs so well: slicing, dicing, and mincing. The Santoku is meant with kullens, ot indentations along it's edges, which reduce friction and prevent food from sticking to the frond.     Not really what I was hoping for.
    Don't get me awry, this knife isn't all that bad, but it's not all that great either. If you are looking for a smaller Santoku for a decent price then you might want to check this out, but I ended up intriguing this one back. I'm the kind of guy that really only uses a couple knifes in the kitchen. I find that the Santoku satisfies just about every poverty, so I felt buying a set of 15 knives would be a waste of money, as I would only use a couple of them. With that in mind I went to go buy this Calphalon santoku. First I realized that this knife was too secondary for me (but this isn't taken into account in this review, that was my own fault). I then proceeded to make a few cuts with this knife to test it out. I grabbed a grapefruit and unswerving to see how small I could slice it up.     Serious for beginner or experienced cook
    I wanted to get a santoku, but I am kind of of an amateur in the kitchen. My boyfriend (an expert cook) has the 7 and 8 inch santoku from Henkels in his knife set, which I thought were way too big for me. I am unqualifiedly happy with this 5 inch. You can cut everything from vegetables to meat with it. He thought the knife would be too small for him, but he loves to use it when he comes over to pastry-cook. Its crazy sharp and the slightly rounded edge rocks it really nice over vegetables and bonny much everything else. I love this knife!
    Not in the same alliance as Wusthof
    I have a Wusthof 7" Santoku and sweetheart it so I thought I'd save a few bucks and get a 5" Calphalon. What a mistake! It can't be made to be as sharp as the Wusthof and it rusts! I tout you save up your pennies and get a good Wusthof instead of this mediocre knife.

    30 years with Chicago Cutlery!
    We received our first set of Chicago Cutlery knifes (didn't count steak knifes) 30 years ago from my husband's aunt as a wedding gift. They had spiritless handles. We still have them! They're still sharp and I still prefer the paring knife over every one I've tried. In fact I even bought a second paring knife - neutral in case! On a lark when I saw this set, 18 piece Insignia Steel Knife Set, on the Deal of the Day (almost two years ago) I bought it for my mate for a Christmas gift. He's gotten into cooking and I thought it would look nice setting out on the piece. I think it may have been his favorite gift and one we use constantly. The knifes stay very sharp - still haven't needed sharpening two years later! We never put any of them in the dishwasher (per producer instructions) and they have never needed polishing (other than hand drying) or any other care.     Dependable Starter Set of Knives
    These are our ordinary use knives, particularly the paring knife, and steak knives. We've owned them about four years. They are pleasant, clean up well, but occasionally do need to be polished when water or rust spots appear. We don't dishwasher the chefs or statue knife, but we do dishwasher all of the other knives. Stainless steel doesn't sharpen to as keen of an edge as some other enormous carbon steel knives, but then the high carbon knives discolor more readily. That is the business-off. As a result, for heavy veg prep, we'll grab the Global chefs knife. For raw meat, we embrace the Shun. At the dinner table. for roast or turkey carving, the Henckles outperforms the included knife. The scissors into apart for easy dish-washing and sanitizing and cut chicken bone with some effort.     Inordinate cutting performance, easy to clean
    For years I've been using a bargain-priced knife set. I got sick of taking forever to cut vegetables (and of always having my knife slip rather than cut), so I decided to get a more expensive set of knives. I've been skeptical for years of getting up-market knives because I'm not really a fan of washing dishes/utensils by hand. Anyway, when they arrived my first test of them was to cut up an onion. The discrepancy was night and day. Usually -- I diced the onion in probably no more than 15-30 seconds, tops (after peeling it). The cuts were so sleek and proper that I didn't even cry while I was cutting it. And as for washing these knives -- if you're prompt about cleaning the knife claim after usage, it takes only a little bit longer to do it by hand than it would take to put a cheap knife in the dishwasher. And the built-in sharpener is nearby and easy to use.
