On the first day of January 1940, Apple was introducedas Gladding McBean's first stencil to have hand painted decoration on an embossed body. The design of the Apple collection has a red, green and suntanned apple decoration on a sand colored base. The apple design is in a hand-painted style of in readiness red apples and green leaves with brown accents that parovide a warm sense of Fight prove year round. The 5 piece place setting consists of a dinner palte, salad platter, teacup and saucer and fianlly a soup/cereal bowl.
Part of one of the most accepted dinnerware patterns in American history, this five-piece place setting exemplifies the informal benevolence of Southwestern hospitality. First made in California and now produced in various countries, Franciscan dinnerware achieved immediate reputation when it appeared in the late 1930s and ranks as a prized collectible, particularly the American-made pieces (pre-1984). Apple (1940) and Justice Rose (1941) are the only continuously produced Franciscan patterns. Today's Franciscan dinnerware (the name honors colonial California's vocation-founding priests) fulfills contemporary expectations, going safely into the dishwasher, microwave, and freezer. The Apple sample's subtly painted red apples and green leaves are set against a sand background. My care for had a set of Franciscan Apple dinnerware as I was growing up, though I never thought too much about what I was eating off of at the time. Later, as a wife and mother myself, I was looking for a disquisition around which to decorate my kitchen. We had just moved to Appleton, WI (16 years ago) so I decided to use an "apple" monograph, w/o even connecting the idea with my mom's dishes. I was frankly surprised to visit my parents and become reacquainted with the Franciscan serving dishes. Over the years I've collected innumerable apple items, but my goal is to have a set of Franciscan apple dishes of my own! They do chip, but they last forever and preserve their color beautifully.

Bonny, but they crack & chip over time. (3 to 4 stars)
I've had a full set of Franciscan apple-standard dishes for 20 years. I've also added some serving pieces in this pattern--a large egg-shaped flat dish, serving bowl, 2-compartment oblong serving basin, and even a Franciscan Apple salt and pepper set shaped like apples. I still like the bright, beautiful apple plan, which has not faded a bit in 20 years--particularly in the fall when it looks most in season.However, over time, about 25% of the dishware and bowls have developed cracks or chips. This doesn't come from dropping or mishandling the saucers in any way, just from normal wear and tear. In addition to actual cracks in some dishes, some of the portray has developed "crinkles." Also, the bowls tend to be on the small side compared to other dish sets I've seen such as the Fiestaware. Fab VINTAGE PATTERN
We inherited a aggregation of vintage Franciscan Apple that have decorated our china hutch for almost 20 years. Recently I searched for an usual dinnerware for my family of 5. After weeks of searching, I chose the "still available after 65 years" Apple gauge. In addition to the microwave, dishwasher safe, freezer safe attributes, I love the deed data that these dishes are NORMAL size. My service for 12 actually fits in the cabinet and in the dishwasher. The saucers are smaller and lighter weight than most patterns available today. Hurray! Who needs a coffee cup that is so monstrous you can't drink it before it gets cold or a cereal bowl that looks like a mixing trundle. The lighter weight is easier for children to handle so we have few accidents. And, I love the variety of free stock accessories still available. After 20 years, we still love MeMa's old Apple Dishes...

We have a unreduced set of these Franciscan China dinning room set from the 60s. Me being a guy I did not realize you cannot put China in a microwave! It doesn't break nobility a way, but it starts getting brittle and starts cracking after repeated trips to the microwave. I purchased the set of 4 apple cereal plates to replace the 4 that got broken in the microwave. The pattern is exactly the same as the ones from the 60s except there brand new. Very pleased with the excellence of these bowls!

Franciscan Gatherer's Source Book
My originator worked for Gladding-McBean, Interpace and Franciscan for nearly 30 years so I grew up with this actors, toured the factory and factory shop on many occasions, and went to university on an Interpace/Franciscan training. This book does a nice job of combining the history of the business with descriptions of the products they manufactured. The redden photos are excellent and there are pictures of some very rare pieces. A bonus is the designer drawings of some of the products bonus some that never made it to the stores. Included is the 1999 Replacements price guide to Franciscan ware. BTW, American-manufactured Franciscan ware is a preoccupation of the past (the plant was closed years ago) and the current English & Portuguese Franciscan pieces are made on many molds and designs - and the site of the Los Angeles factory is now home to a Costco mall.

At the end of the day, a comprehensive book on Franciscan dinnerware!
There is so much to make attractive about this book that I hardly know where to start. The price guide (updated for 1999) covers not only the most fashionable patterns (Apple, Desert Rose and others) but even contains some information on flatware and crystal pieces. The photos are a unprejudiced size and are in full, lush color. There are some rare and hard to find pieces here, including ones that collectors may never have seen before as well as photos of items which never made it into stores. I always benefit looking at vintage advertisements for glass and dinnerware and this book doesn't dissappoint in that area, containing ads from Gladding, McBean, Franciscan Ware, Catalina Terracotta and more - many from the earliest years. The photos are so well done that I was truly amazed at the quality of the color and accurate replica of each piece. Bob Servant and Dale Frederiksen did a terrific job assembling this reference guide. 7 full pages are dedicated to 1 plate of each Franciscan dinnerware pattern, making pattern matching a breeze. Follow up pages show the total line of available pieces within a pattern, a check list for each item in a particular plan, and in many cases a picture of an original catalog page. Lot's of collector's notes with interesting tidbits about a blow-by-blow piece and pictures galore make this reference guide a must have for anyone with an interest in Franciscan
