Reliability? We don't need no stinkin' reliability..
Wow. I am positively trying to like Dish Network. I recently switched from DirecTV after being a DirecTV subscriber since the mid 90's. When told it would take almost 6 weeks for a DirecTV utility person to come out and replace my dish, I looked into Dish Network, liked what I saw and switched. They were able to have someone out the next day. The price was a lot less for more programming than I was getting from DirecTV. The HD constituents is wonderful. Their installation guy was hard working and professional and their customer service people were but for the fact that. The only DVR they had was the VIP722. I had TIVO's with DirecTV. Long story short, My first VIP722 died after about 3 weeks. I went through the cut, reconnect routine a number of times. I tried plugging it directly into the wall in preference to of a surge protector or battery backup. Noting seemed to help. Past Tivo/Cox user, switched to Dish.
I made the lash from using Cox Communications and Tivo over to the satellite services about a month ago and so far I've been very satisfied. Dish and DirecTv have unbroken deals at the moment that I suggest people to research on their websites. In short, it was cheaper for me to thrash to a satellite service if I wanted HD and DVR services in the long run over Cox and TiVo.As far as this DVR goes, I being loving it so far. 60 hrs of HD recording and 200+ of SD. I have 10 HD pictures on it and I'm still barely past using half of its available space. The DVR can be hooked up to 2 separate TVs(one of them HD, the other has to be SD). I present you plan to have the TVs near each other unless you wish to run alot of cable across the house. Both TVs can access strange recordings stored on the DVR at the same time, something very convenient for families. Terrific when it isn't rebooting
** Update 12-14-2009 **The segment has not failed for about one year. Apparently firmware has resolved the the reboot issue. I'm still using a surger patron despite DN tech support advising against it. Perhaps, the utility company added more power to my household words ;~) (see comments about DN tech support in my original post). Anyway, the unit has been reliable and has no unconcealed faults. I haven't connected an external Hard Drive for added storage but it's a - pleasantly feature (despite $40 fee to activate). The unit will provide HD viewing to one TV and SD to a second. It's in all probability the best DVR available at the present, possibly with the exception of the Tivo HD unit. The 722K, a dual follower tuner model, is virtually identical to the 722 except for the following:1. Noticeably elevate surpass HD and SD picture quality than previous generation ViP's. (ViP 922 is also reported to have noticeable better PQ).2. Bad PRODUCT - DISK LIFE IS ABOUT 18 - 24 MONTHS
I installed and get along a number of these units for our Emergency Operations at work. I also have one at home. We struggled through some software issues with the more rapidly versions of this product and with the VIP 622. Most issues with the VIP 622 and 722 were resolved many months ago and are no longer a establishment. Be aware that the hard disks last about 18 to 24 months. Then the unit needs patch up. Dish sends out a replacement if you took the protection plan. If not, there is a nominal charge to replace a feeble-minded unit with a refurbished unit.The units function as advertised and serve us well in the Emergency Centers. I give it a bona fide workout at home. The units do like to be turned of for a couple of hours each day to reconstitute themselves. Otherwise they want periodic rebooting. They need plenty of ventilation as they put out as much heat as a 40 to 60 Watt lightbulb. With that species of energy useage, even when they are turned off, they cannot be Energy Star rated; and...

Wonderful TO HAVE POINT & CLICK RECORDING AGAIN
After digital over-the-air signals axed TVGOS programming downloads (and tempo signal) to our Panasonic DVR with hard drive, we finally broke down and signed up for Dish Network's offer for detach HD upgrade with $6/mo DVR fee (with 2 yr commitment, etc.) -- specifying the 722k. I'm not a big fan of renting equipment, but for some argument (digital licensing issues?) we haven't able to find a DVR with digital tuner and hard force for a reasonable price. Since the $6/mo fee applies whether you use your DVR or theirs, and since the hard drive seems to have a limited memoirs (though the Dish rep said it depends on how much TV one watches (obviously) -- some hard drives might last 5 years), I figured renting is tenable -- $72/yr for 2 to 5 yrs is $144 to $360 -- not far from the ~$350 Amazon is asking. And if your hard drive goes out after 2 years, you send it back to Dish and get another for a insubstantial shipping fee.Ours worked fine right out of the box. Features have been well...

Portion is excellent. Works very well. Only drawback is that it does not support an extrenal HDD to enable the PVR / DVR capabilities.

Eminent product and it turns on automatically for programing set when it may be off. That reviewer shouldn't operate electronics.

weigh of Dual tuner
The system worked choice, but had two shortcomings - both of which I should have known in advance (so I am not complaining, just noting). The Dual Tuner VIP222k is not upgradable with a USB oppressive drive, to allow recording. The Single tuner VIP211k is. Also the VIP222k needs an additional module (~$50) to nick in and record over the air ATSC signals. The VIP 211k is already equipped for it. I returned it and bought the VIP 211k. It would be well turned out to have the dual tuner, but not fatal!

HDCP / Audio Sync Issues - High Def Forum - Your High Definition ...
I be familiar with one alternative is to rip off up the reciever to the TV with HDMI for vidio timer, then an optical guy from the dependant recipient to the A/V recipient so I can recieve the full DD grumble. I have played with the settings in the minion reciever over and over, and have turned the blooming on the TV on and off, any conspiracy of settings still produces an audio sync end.

Your Dish network is a Sat system that uses microwave signals which are entirely opposite. Who on clay told you the Dish recipient would purvey your computer tuner membership card. Go buy a musical sound UHF sensor, hook it to your tuner come clean and have the software scrutinize for signals.

It's right that this receiver can control two TVs and one will be in standard definition. This is done with the receiver in Dual mode, gist that two rooms with two TVs are controlling the receiver independently (with one in SD and the other in HD).

My control is that you can only play the external data on the dvr it was recorded from. So real time copy is your only preference.
